Geek humour reigns supreme in new play, In the Air Tonight. It's playing at Marrickville's Sidetrack Theatre as part of Sydney Comedy Festival's line-up of giggly fun times.
But don't feel excluded if you don't know your binary functions from your hexspeak, any noob can enjoy what In the Air Tonight has to offer. This includes some very intense interaction between the leads, Jared (Paul Ayre) and Xavier (David Collins), two young astronauts enlisted to embark on the 17 year journey from Earth to Pluto, only to discover that Pluto is no longer a planet (and this happens well into the epic monotonous voyage).
They fight, try to kill each other and even try to kill themselves (which has happened on many occasions, as noted on the chalk board tally they have on stage). They re-enact Xavier's break-up with his Fiancé, Elenor (Sarah Bishop) to constantly reassure themselves they have made the right decision and even keep track of when the planes fly, quite loudly, above the theatre (this got a roaring round of applause). Meanwhile, two young (and incredibly hilarious) hackers, Penny (also played by Sarah Bishop) and Graham (Nick Boshier) try, and succeed, in getting in contact with the astronauts.
Last, but not least, the entire play is set to the tune of Phil Collins. If you are a fan, this is a sure treat. If you aren't, you might well be by the end of the play, especially when it builds up to what is revealed by Jared and Xavier in 'the room' (no spoilers here)....
But Seriously (pun intended), this is a fun new original play by Paul Ayre, and you get the added star-cred from David Collins (the other half of the Umbilical Brothers). I'm telling you, You've been waiting for this moment, For all your life, Oh Lord, oh Lord (I couldn't help myself...).
